Staying Effective and Flexible: Brandon Young of Young Management & Consulting Shares the Benefits of Keeping Your Business Small

When many of us fell on hard times during the tough year of 2020, Brandon Young, founder of Young Management & Consulting, found a breakthrough year. Yet, he did not let the uncharacteristic success go to his head – instead, he buckled down and figured out how he could share his success with others, as giving back to the community is an important part of his life and values.

“My company has allowed me to see the bigger picture and realize the importance of helping others and giving back. My responsibility has increased to want to add value to my professional and personal life as well as the need to represent diverse businesses. I realize that I have to raise the bar. I am a voice for many,” Brandon outlines.

Young Management & Consulting began in 2015 and hit their stride about five years into business. Their business spans many industries, including the energy sector, where they provide project and construction management. Young Management & Consulting also develops technology solutions, providing technical project management as well as owner engineering overview. On top of it all, they also provide gas pipeline and electric utility services and consulting.

With a breadth of services, Young Management and Consulting is still a small company. While this means they are able to prioritize personalized and bespoke service, it also means they face unique challenges, specifically in competition with other larger companies.

“It can be very hard to compete and make our company stand out. The fact that we are a small diverse business is hard. We don’t have big exposure and financial backing. We differentiate, we’re a diverse small business and can be more flexible than larger companies in a timely manner,” Brandon says.

Never one to let any challenges get in the way of his goals, Brandon finds solace in being able to navigate his smaller team in a way that makes them hyper efficient and effective.

“Although we are small enough, our leadership comes from larger company backgrounds. Our team may be small, but we have the same or better processes in house as larger corporations to ensure a true value add to customers and partners. We call ourselves the navy seals team, for how we do business: ‘Lean, strong, organized and structured’. We have a technical know-how that other larger companies struggle to achieve at their size,” Brandon remarks.

Brandon is able to power through the challenges and see the brighter side of things because he stays motivated. When asked to recall a time when he wanted to throw in the towel, Brandon, not surprisingly, came up empty.

“I have always been motivated. I’m always excited when it comes to my business. I’ve had experiences in my life that made me never want to give up or go back,” Brandon says.

His motivation allows him to keep his work-life balance in check, even when he works with many family members. In fact, working closely with family has brought them closer together.

“As a small business you have to wear many hats. You have to split your time evenly between business and personal. Allocate the timing to what’s important at that time. There are times where my personal life may have to take a back seat at times when it comes to my business. I do a great job on turning it off, It’s a matter of saying no,” Brandon says.

In 2021, Brandon has his sights set on big goals. As they come off a year of great success, the only direction to go is up. In the coming months, Young Management and Consulting will work to continue to add strategic value to customers, as well as adding more staff and projects to the team.

“I want to continue to give back to the community continuously. Seek company to company partners. My ultimate goal is to be a key provider to big companies, but as a small company now,” Brandon outlines.
